Laois Branch RTAI (RTAI Laoise) is a constituent branch of the Retired Teachers Association of Ireland (R.T.A.I.) having its registered office at Vere Foster House, 35 Parnell Square, Dublin 1.
(Vere Foster House eircode DO1 ET 35   Phone 01-2454130  Web www.rtaireland.ie e-mail info@rtaireland.ie )
Greetings to all our members on this very unusual start to Easter week and what would have in our teaching days been the start of our Easter Holidays. I hope all are coping well with the lock-down/ social distancing / cocooning that we are presently experiencing and hopefully there will soon be an end in sight.
In normal circumstances I would be reminding you of our monthly social meeting on Tuesday  but it seems even such meetings may not take place for a long time and all events are off for now. The RTAI Head Office is closed but will still deal with any queries you may have by email and a return call (See RTAI website for details).
As I said in my previous letter I am not qualified to give any advice but I’m just putting up a few contacts re same.
In terms of the virus the best source of information/advice/guidelines are on the HSE booklet that has been issued to every household and also on the HSE website hse.ie and the phone number for medical advice for the HSE is 1850 24 1850 .
Also in terms of support re. shopping, medicines, travel for medical reasons etc Laois County Council is part of The Community Call programme  and if you need/or know of people who need help with deliveries of provisions, travel for important reasons please call Laois County Council at 1800 23 2010 . The line is open 7 days a week from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm or visit gov.ie for more details.
ALONE the agency which supports older people to age at home may also be useful for advice and assistance . Their contacts are alone.ie and 0818 222 024 .
Another group that acts on behalf of older people is AGE ACTION. Further information at ageaction.ie or 01 4756989.
Your local postman/woman are also available to help  and will take and deliver letters and parcels so the'cocooned’ do not need to visit a post office.
Also you might use the Laois RTAI website for some practical and entertaining reasons e.g it has links to the following .
  • Play bridge online (free).
  • Skype (how to use it to see people as they are on phone with you).
  • Using a smartphone or iphone.
  • Shopping online.
The LAOIS TODAY app on your phone is also a great source of local information.
As this message only goes to people on my email list it would be great if you could check with members known to you who do not use email or social media and keep them up-to-date (and especially if any are living alone). Also if you know of anyone who doesnt get this group email please forward them this message.
Hoping all stay well and keep safe.
